Dreamhost Review – An overview and review of the Dreamhost Webhosting Platform. Is Dreamhost worth its cost? Find out here in this webhosting review article.
Dreamhost has been in the business for quite some time and offers a lot of great services to its customers. They are definitely for a certain type of business or person, and not for others. If you understand hosting and exactly what you want from a provider, then they may just be for you, but if you are just starting out and haven’t a clue, you may want to go with a hosting company that breaks it all down and makes it a little easier to digest.
One great thing they offer is a 97 day trail period, and once that is over, if you are not satisfied, then you can part ways and there are no hard feelings.
With all of the plans you have unlimited bandwidth, and they offer a lot of free backup space, plus you have the option to purchase more room in the Cloud Services. This is nice to know that you have access to the Cloud, but honestly, if you’re never going to use it, it doesn’t quite sell it for me.
One thing it doesn’t offer that can be a deal breaker for some is they don’t have a site builder. While it’s not hard to create a site somewhere else, and then upload it to Dreamhost, it may not be something you want to do.
The prices are fair, especially considering the services they offer, and with that 97 day trail period, you really can’t go wrong. The most basic plan is under nine dollars, and it comes with free domain name. It’s around twenty dollars for WordPress hosting, and then for VPS it’s $15-$120 depending on how maximized you want to be. Dedicated servers are all going to be over $150.
The two main cons of Dreamhost is their 24/7 customer service is all done via live chats and emails, so you can’t pick up the phone and get immediate answers at times. However, they do have forums that help answer your basic questions. Also, they can get a little more complicated than your average host, and this can be intimidating to someone who is new.
They can easily take care of sites with a lot of traffic, and if you need to upgrade because you have suddenly developed a strong online presence, they make the transition seamless so your business doesn’t have any setbacks.
Email set-up is easy and with limitless amounts of space, plus you can have as many email addressed as you wish. They do not put a limit on it, however they do watch to make sure it is not being used for spam purposes. Dreamhost has wonderful security, and is very proactive in making sure that if you use a shared site, and your traffic begins to increase, that you won’t slow anyone else’s site down. They will approach you with your upgrade options. As a shared site owner, this should make you happy to know, busier sites aren’t going to slow you.
Dreamhost has been around and definitely knows what they are doing, but in many cases they are suited better for someone who can jump right in there. That’s why I wouldn’t recommend Dreamhost to someone fresh out of the gate, but to someone who has website building and hosting knowledge. If you are new to webhosting, I personally recommend that you signup with Hostgator. We personally have multiple webhosting accounts with them and they are currently our #1 webhosting recommendation.
